Launched in August of 2015, Konsus now provides on-demand business support for over 500 companies. After joining Y Combinator in January 2016, growth accelerated to 13 percent weekly, reaching a total of more than 1,100 corporate users after only seven months of operation.
The Internet has made it easier than ever for companies to grow yet – until recently – tech for productivity has stalled. According to the Harvard Business Review, 40 percent of office time is spent on routine tasks such as PowerPoint, data entry and proofreading. These tasks can be time-consuming for employees, and require skill sets that cannot be automated.
Instead of wasting time and personnel on these tasks, businesses can hire an online freelancer. However, finding a qualified freelancer through traditional online platforms can be a long process, which makes meeting deadlines more difficult. In addition, the lack of accountability and quality control can lead to poor job performance, resulting in even more time wasted.
Konsus founders Fredrik Thomassen and Sondre Rasch experienced these difficulties firsthand.
Fredrik Thomassen is the former co-founder and CEO of Zalora Indonesia and a former consultant with McKinsey & Company. He is a graduate of the Norwegian School of Economics and London School of Economics.
Sondre Rasch is the co-founder of SolidHost.com and a policy advisor with the Norwegian parliament. He is a computer and information science graduate of the University of Bergen and the Norwegian School of Economics.
Konsus was originally developed for large consultancies in Norway to eliminate deskwork and increase productivity.
“We created Konsus because we found ourselves doing a lot of boring stuff we weren’t good at, and outsourcing it was hard and risky,” explains Rasch. “We’re basically packaging freelance work in a way normal companies can use, by being on-demand and guaranteeing the results.”
The way it works is simple: businesses message Konsus via chat describing the specific task or project with which they need help. A typical example is to polish a PowerPoint presentation by the following morning.
Konsus aims to bring quality and structure into the business freelancing space, similar to transportation freelance companies like Uber. However, instead of an Uber driver, Konsus is equipped with around-the-clock and local-language project managers.
These project managers immediately respond to clients via email or chat and oversee the entire order handling process and quality assurance. The freelancers themselves are pre-vetted as the top one percent in their fields and are assigned projects based on skill and availability.
“We have both been management consultants in blue brackets, and have not only been deeply exposed to office tasks ourselves but also seen firsthand the type of tasks the modern employee spends their time on,” says Thomassen. “We know people need it, because we need it ourselves.”
Konsus has created a convenient and dependable product better suited for busy CEOs and employees. In a world where people not only expect exactly what they want but also want it immediately, Konsus hopes to be a key partner for future-facing companies.
